Notebook: Postseason Awards Put Stamp on Hoops Season

Parkway West forward Larry Toomey earns Suburban South Player of the Year honors.

It was a disappointing season for the Parkway West boys basketball team, but that did not slow down Larry Toomey. The 6-foot-6 senior forward was named the Suburban South Player of the Year earlier this month. Toomey shares this honor with University City junior guard Trevon Williams. Parkway West was 21-7 one year ago, but ended this season at 12-14 despite winning six of its final 10 games. The Longhorns and first-year head coach John Wright not only lose Toomey, but they will see six seniors graduate. Toomey’s next stop is West Point, as he will play for Army in the Patriot League this fall. Toomey became the seventh player in Longhorns history to reach 1,000 career points this season, and he led Parkway West with averages of 17.1 …

Notebook: Marquette Boys Claim First District Title in 15 Years

The Mustangs defeat top-seeded Parkway South, 30-28, in the Class 5 District 4 title game

It will most likely be the lowest scoring boys basketball district championship played in Missouri this season, but that matters very little to Marquette. The Mustangs, behind 6-foot-9 junior center Ryan Rosburg, defeated top-seeded Parkway South, 30-28, in the Class 5 District 4 title game at Lafayette High School on Friday night. Rosburg scored 14 points, including the tiebreaking basket with seven seconds left, to down the Patriots (21-6). The Mustangs won their three district games by a combined eight points. For Marquette (18-10) coach Shane Matzen and his seniors, the win had increased satisfaction given that the third-seeded Mustangs had lost three straight district title games. It is Marquette’s first district title in 15 years. …

Parkway Central Falls in Two Overtimes at Chaminade Finale

John Burroughs hung on through two overtimes to beat Parkway Central, 76-70, on Wednesday at the Chaminade Holiday Tournament.

John Burroughs hung on through constant lead changes in the second half and overtime to defeat Parkway Central, 76-70, in double overtime on Wednesday at the Chaminade Holiday Tournament. With the loss, Parkway West had to settle for sixth place in the tourney. The Colts started the game with a depleted bench. Both starting guards were on the injured list. Junior Zach Carel is recovering from a concussion while junior Joe Esstman is suffering from a serious thigh injury.  That forced sophomore guard Antwon Hoard to move up from the junior varsity to the starting lineup. Hoard started cold in the first half, missing one shot and grabbing just a single rebound. But, in the second half, his play was a major factor in the Colts overcoming a …

Parkway Central Routs DuBourg at Chaminade

Parkway Central routed DuBourg, 61-34, in the Chaminade Christmas Tournament.

Prior to Tuesday night's game against DuBourg, Parkway Central head coach Todd Pannett told his players, "Whoever shows up, be ready to play." The Colts have several players sick or hurt. However, that did not stop them from playing hard and defeating the Bishop DuBourg Cavaliers, 61-34, in the second round of the Chaminade Christmas Tournament Tuesday. With the win, Parkway Central advanced to play John Burroughs on Wednesday. Pannett was proud of his team's determination and effort against DuBourg. "I feel really good. We set the tone early and told the players to be aggressive on the defense and they did just that," Pannett said. The Colts (4-5) took an 11-point lead in the first quarter on Tuesday and the defense only allowed three …

Parkway Central Boys Fall to Hazelwood West in Chaminade Tournament

Parkway Central lost, 84-63, despite a strong first half.

The Parkway Central Colts trailed the Hazelwood West Wildcats for much of the game and ultimately fell, 84-63, Monday in the Chaminade Christmas Basketball Tournament. "Defensively, I thought we did a great job; offensively was well executed and I told the kids at halftime we need a second half like our first half, but unfortunately they got us with their dribble drive penetration," said Colts Head Coach Todd Pannet. During the first quarter, the Wildcats (7-2) took a nine-point lead. However, with only seconds left on the clock, Colts guard Elliot Rosen threw a long pass to Kevin Forness, who was able to close the lead to 18-13. As the second quarter started, the Wildcats seemed to lose some wind and the Colts took full advantage. With …

Defense Enables Parkway Central to Overcome Loss of Carel

The Colts boys basketball team plays without injured guard Zach Carel and defeats Francis Howell, 34-32, in the GAC/Suburban Basketball Challenge at the Family Arena in St. Charles.

Parkway Central boys basketball coach Todd Pannett is seeking some answers on offense from his team after the loss of starting point guard and last season's leading scorer Zach Carel. Carel suffered a concussion in the Colts' loss to Lindbergh last week and is expected to miss at least two weeks. The Colts' first game without their floor general was on Sunday against Francis Howell in the GAC/Suburban Basketball Challenge. Sunday's game with Francis Howell provided no offensive answers, but the Colts found enough defense to take a 34-32 victory in a defensive struggle at the Family Arena in St. Charles. "Our kids really persevered today," Pannett said. "We lost our all-conference point guard and leading scorer from last year, so we're …

Parkway Central Falls at Home to Red-Hot Lindbergh

The Flyers cruised after a very strong first half, and rolled to their fourth-straight win, 59-34 over Parkway Central on Tuesday night.

With his team leading 29-15 at halftime, Lindbergh boys basketball coach Jason Wolfard went into the locker room unsure what to say that was negative to his team. He couldn't get mad at the shooting after they went 6-for-7 from behind the 3-point line. He couldn't be upset with how they took care of the ball after they committed just six turnovers. And he surely couldn't find fault with a stifling defense that allowed Parkway Central just two points in the second quarter. "We went in there at halftime and tried to find something we could get on them for to do better," Wolfard joked. "We got on them for offensive rebounds but couldn't really get on them too much for that because we shot the ball so well and didn't have many opportunities…
