Parkway West forward Larry Toomey earns Suburban South Player of the Year honors.
It was a disappointing season for the Parkway West boys basketball team, but that did not slow down Larry Toomey. The 6-foot-6 senior forward was named the Suburban South Player of the Year earlier this month. Toomey shares this honor with University City junior guard Trevon Williams. Parkway West was 21-7 one year ago, but ended this season at 12-14 despite winning six of its final 10 games. The Longhorns and first-year head coach John Wright not only lose Toomey, but they will see six seniors graduate. Toomey’s next stop is West Point, as he will play for Army in the Patriot League this fall. Toomey became the seventh player in Longhorns history to reach 1,000 career points this season, and he led Parkway West with averages of 17.1 …

The Mustangs defeat top-seeded Parkway South, 30-28, in the Class 5 District 4 title game
It will most likely be the lowest scoring boys basketball district championship played in Missouri this season, but that matters very little to Marquette. The Mustangs, behind 6-foot-9 junior center Ryan Rosburg, defeated top-seeded Parkway South, 30-28, in the Class 5 District 4 title game at Lafayette High School on Friday night. Rosburg scored 14 points, including the tiebreaking basket with seven seconds left, to down the Patriots (21-6). The Mustangs won their three district games by a combined eight points. For Marquette (18-10) coach Shane Matzen and his seniors, the win had increased satisfaction given that the third-seeded Mustangs had lost three straight district title games. It is Marquette’s first district title in 15 years. …

Parkway West connects on 13 shots from 3-point range to defeat Parkway Central, 71-45, in a Suburban South Conference matchup.
Fans of the Parkway West girls varsity team have to be wondering what got into the Longhorns on Tuesday night. The Parkway Central Colts were powerless against Parkway West as the Longhorns drilled 13 shots in 19 attempts from 3-point range. They defeated the Colts, 71-45, in a conference battle. Parkway West improved to 4-17 this season, including 2-3 in the Suburban South Conference. They had lost 13 of their previous 14 games. Parkway Central (9-13) is 2-3 in league play. “Shots were falling at a higher rate for us,” said Longhorns head coach John Sloop. “Basketball is a crazy game and we just made more of our shots tonight.” The Colts managed a two-point lead over the Longhorns in the first quarter, 12-10. But they couldn’t hold onto …

The Parkway Central girls basketball team defeats Seckman, 43-37, in a Suburban South Conference matchup.
IMPERIAL – The Parkway Central girls basketball team enjoyed two snow days off from school, like almost all students in St. Louis, on Thursday and Friday. It may have almost been their downfall on Friday night. Parkway Central almost let a seven-point first-half lead slip away at Seckman, but the Colts held on for a Suburban South Conference win over the Jaguars, 43-37. Parkway Central is 2-1 in conference play and 8-9 overall. “I just think that being off of school two days in a row, it’s kind of every student’s dream, and every basketball player’s nightmare,” Colts senior guard Alison Magruder said. “Anytime you can get a chance to shoot, it helps,” Jaguars head coach Tim Meeks said. Seckman (5-10) had Thursday off, but not Friday. “The …

Parkway Central falls, 59-25, at home against Kirkwood on Friday night.
The Kirkwood girls basketball team entered Suburban South Conference play as the only team in the league with a winning non-conference mark. Unfortunately for Parkway Central, that success was no illusion. The Pioneers showed that they will be a team to watch within the league as they defeated the Colts, 59-25, in the Suburban South opener Friday night at Parkway Central. Six-foot-three freshman center Zoe Wallis had 11 points to pace the Colts, who fell to 5-8 overall. "We ran our offense pretty well at times, and got good looks at the basket," Parkway Central coach Brian Guilfoyle said. "We just did not do a good job of putting the ball in the basket. We must have missed nine layups and we were 5-of-17 from the free-throw line. “You are …

Parkway Central falls, 48-44, to Oakville on Sunday in the opening round of the Lutheran South Christmas Tournament.
Free-throw shooting and overall shooting has been a problem early this season for the Oakville girls basketball team. But, that was not the case Sunday. Oakville won 48-44 over Parkway Central in the opening round of the Lutheran South Christmas Tournament. It was a frustrating, close loss for the Colts. "There are some things fundamentally that we need to work on," Parkway Central Coach Brian Guilfoyle said. "We need to take better care of the ball. Turnovers have been our Achilles heel this season. But I did feel the kids competed well and played hard." The Tigers converted 22 of 27 free throw attempts in the game, including their first 10 in the second half. "Coach (Aaron) Bosch said that good free-throw shooting can win games," said …

Parkway Central was tied at 23 at halftime, but the Colts (2-3) lost, 47-39, at Pattonville.
A young Parkway Central girl's team kept things close for one half on Tuesday night at Pattonville, but couldn't keep up with the Pirates in the second half. After playing to a 23-23 tie at halftime, the Colts (2-3) could not maintain their scoring against a strong second-half press and lost, 47-39, at Pattonville. Parkway Central elected to concentrate on containing Pattonville standout Mikala McGhee by collapsing a zone defense on her. She always had two Parkway players guarding her inside the 3-point line all night. McGhee, who scored 28 points in the season opener against Fort Zumwalt North, only scored five first-half points and 14 for the night. The Parkway Central defense left her 0-for-8 from beyond the 3-point line and 3-for-7 …
