Parkway Budget Cuts Win Easy Approval at Board Meeting

The $3.3-4.1 million in reductions over the next two years, approximately 1-2 percent of the overall budget, were passed unanimously in a process that Parkway's board president characterized as lacking in any substantial controversy.

Budget cuts can often bring controversy and stir up emotions, but a proposed package of $3.3-4.1 million in spending reductions that will eliminate approximately 38 positions over the next two years won easy approval at a meeting of the Parkway School Board Wednesday night. The cuts include the loss of three full-time positions at each of the major high schools, a reduction in school budgets by five percent and dropper the summer school program from four weeks to three. Superintendent Keith Marty has previously said that the majority of jobs will be eliminated through attrition rather than layoffs. No residents used the “public comment” of the meeting to speak about the proposed cuts and it was passed by a unanimous vote following a short …

Parkway Superintendent Defends Pay Increases Ahead of Vote on Budget Cuts

The Parkway School Board is set to vote on a package of cuts totaling $3.3-4.1 million at a board meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Central Middle School.

As the Parkway School Board prepares to vote on a proposed package of $3.3-4.1 million in budget cuts at a meeting tonight, one of the items that is not on the table is pay freezes for the district’s top-paid employees. First, he noted that it’s a question of fairness. In Parkway’s case, the district’s unionized employees are under contracts until June 2014 that include pay increases. “Should administrators, for example, be frozen while teachers are going to get a pay increase?” …

We are forgetting about the teachers who are being asked to do significantly more with more students and less assistance for significantly less pay because of these decisions. At $227,000 do you really believe he is hurting to not get a pay increase?   more ›

Board officials heard a report on the plan to conduct the searches twice a semester.

Parkway officials are moving toward plans to bring drug-sniffing dogs to the district's high schools.  The Parkway School Board heard details of the plan at the district’s high schools in January at a board meeting Wednesday night. Parkway Deputy Superintendent Desi Kirchhofer presented the board with a report and explained that the program is an addition to the many safety and security measures the district already employs. “This isn’t a stand alone, it’s packaged with a lot of measures that we use to keep our schools and safe drugs free,” Kirchhofer said. We cannot just leave this problem up to school administrators and law enforcement. Parents have access to home drug test kits to detect for common drugs of abuse like marijuana, cocaine, heroin, benzos, and barbiturates. Kids begin experimenting with pills because they are free, and typically unlocked at home. They may even attend so called farming or pharming parties. That's where kids each …   more ›
