Parkway Central Mueller Wins All-Star Home Run Derby

More than 30 area seniors played in the Delta Dental SmilesLeague All-Star Baseball Game on Monday at Busch Stadium.

Former St. Louis Cardinals player Kerry Robinson knows the significance of playing a high school baseball game at Busch Stadium. Robinson played twice at the old Busch Stadium during his days at Hazelwood East High School, and when he accepted a coaching position at the Delta Dental SmilesLeague All-Star Baseball Game it was an opportunity to remember days of the past. “This is a big deal for these guys because I know that when I was in high school I got to play against Pattonville and had a great time,” Robinson said. “So this is a great opportunity to get out here and be like Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday and all of those guys that they see on TV.” Thirty-two area high school seniors selected by high school coaches to play in the all-…

Missouri All-Stars Outshine Illinois in Busch Stadium Showcase

Parkway West's Carter Smith was part of the High School Baseball Showcase.

As the area’s top baseball players stepped onto the field at Busch Stadium for this year’s High School Baseball Showcase, plenty of boyhood dreams came true. For Brett Graves, not only did a boyhood dream come true on Monday afternoon, it was also a taste of what could be an everyday occurrence for the recent Francis Howell graduate who was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals. “It’s fun to think about playing at Busch someday,” Graves said. “Even if I wasn’t drafted by the Cardinals, I would still be really happy to be here, but the fact that I could be back here in a few years makes it that much more special. I’ve been to a million games since I was a little kid, and this is definitely a dream come true.” Graves and the Missouri All-Stars …

The event, which will pit the Missouri All Stars against the Illinois All Stars, will be played at 1:15 p.m. The game will be preceded by a home-run hitting contest and a skills competition at 10 a.m. Former Cardinals players Mike Matheny and John Mabry will once again manage the teams. "Last year's event was a huge success and I'm excited to bring the High School Showcase back to Busch Stadium for the second year," said Matheny, whose son Tate was a key member of the Class 3 state champion Westminster Christian Academy team…

Suburban South: Parkway West Pitcher Conference's Most Dominant

Logan Hershenow led the league in victories, innings pitched and more.

Seckman and University City high schools dominated the selections for the 2011 Suburban South all-conference team. It is no surprise that the Jaguars had more players—four—than any of the eight conference teams on the 13-player squad. Seckman not only won the league title, but did so without a loss in eight games. But University City, which won only a pair of league games, had three players selected, including the Player of the Year. Statistics play a big part in an all-conference selection and U. City led the league in scoring. Junior catcher Kevin Phillips was named the Player of the Year and rightly so. He led the league in six different offensive categories: batting average (.500), home runs (seven), runs scored (35), slugging …

Mrigank Gupta, a junior at Parkway West High, used bacteria from wastewater to produce energy.

An alternative energy research project created by Mrigank Gupta, a junior at Parkway West High School, has earned him the 2011 High School Water Quality Research Award from Missouri American Water. His project, "Living Bacteria into Electrical Energy," creates a microbial fuel cell using bacterian and sucrose in wastewater. “The process releases a small amount of (carbon dioxide), and the wastewater used is cleaned by the process," he said.
