The Parkway West High School football team is revving up for its third game of the season. With a slow 0-2 start, falling to Timberland Aug. 24 and Ladue Aug. 31 with home-field advantage, the Longhorns are taking it on the road to face the Pioneers of Kirkwood High Sept. 7. Ballwin-Ellisville Patch asked Longhorns Head Coach Jeff Duncan five fast questions as he and the team prepare for their next game. Here's what he had to say: Patch: Other than a "W," what is a main goal you have for the game against Kirkwood this week? Parkway West Football Head Coach Jeff Duncan: Our goal is to get better. Our focus is on "us." We have to get better at what we do each day and each week. Patch: What struggles are the Longhorns dealing with? (…

Parkway West High School football fell to Ladue Horton Watkins Aug. 31 in an off/on downpour, but the Longhorns cheering section declared the game a "beach party."
Swimsuits, floaties, inner tubes, goggles, beach balls—sounds like a day at the pool. But it was hardly that, or a day at the beach for the Parkway West Longhorns (0-2) football team Friday night. In the nearly continuous rainfall Friday while St. Louis received backlashes from the dissipating Hurricane Isaac weather pattern, plans for athletic competitions altered throughout the area. Football remained at Parkway West. The Longhorns cheering section decided to make the most of the weather and, knowing they would get drenched anyway, came decked out in swimwear, ponchos and other beach party notables. "We decided to make it a beach theme," said Victoria Bezzole, a senior on the Parkway West poms team leading cheers of the crowd during …

The Jacksonville Jaguar and former Parkway West and Mizzou football star said he has learned to shut off the negativity.
Blaine Gabbert, currently shaping up to be the starting quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars this football season, said he's learned valuable lessons about media negativity. The Parkway West grad and former Mizzou football player recently discussed a home upset with the Tigers against Oklahoma State in 2008. The loss crushed high championship hopes for the 2008 season after a built-up No. 1 ranking. Where positive media surrounding starting QB Chase Daniel started out the season, Gabbert believes the immediate negativity after the Oklahoma loss crushed Daniel in the end. In a Fox Sports article, Gabbert explains, “All of a sudden, the media just turned on (Daniel). That was the first time I realized you can’t worry about what they say …

More than 30 area seniors played in the Delta Dental SmilesLeague All-Star Baseball Game on Monday at Busch Stadium.
Former St. Louis Cardinals player Kerry Robinson knows the significance of playing a high school baseball game at Busch Stadium. Robinson played twice at the old Busch Stadium during his days at Hazelwood East High School, and when he accepted a coaching position at the Delta Dental SmilesLeague All-Star Baseball Game it was an opportunity to remember days of the past. “This is a big deal for these guys because I know that when I was in high school I got to play against Pattonville and had a great time,” Robinson said. “So this is a great opportunity to get out here and be like Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday and all of those guys that they see on TV.” Thirty-two area high school seniors selected by high school coaches to play in the all-…

Parkway West's Carter Smith was part of the High School Baseball Showcase.
As the area’s top baseball players stepped onto the field at Busch Stadium for this year’s High School Baseball Showcase, plenty of boyhood dreams came true. For Brett Graves, not only did a boyhood dream come true on Monday afternoon, it was also a taste of what could be an everyday occurrence for the recent Francis Howell graduate who was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals. “It’s fun to think about playing at Busch someday,” Graves said. “Even if I wasn’t drafted by the Cardinals, I would still be really happy to be here, but the fact that I could be back here in a few years makes it that much more special. I’ve been to a million games since I was a little kid, and this is definitely a dream come true.” Graves and the Missouri All-Stars …
