Parkway Lauds Chesterfield Spelling Wizard

Fifth-grader was nine contestants away from best speller in the nation!

Chesterfield's national spelling expert, Gokul Venkatachalam was recognized for his abilities Wednesday night by his home school district Board of Education, Parkway. Gokul, a fifth grader at Claymont Elementary, advanced to the semifinal round in 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee until tripping up on the word "kahikatea" a word of Maori origin referring to a type of coniferous tree found in New Zealand. He had only nine competitors left in the nation at that point, out of 278 local champs who started. The top winner was an 8th-grader. Venkatachalam misspelled the word as "kaikatea" after Spelling Bee officials pronounced the word incorrectly, as though it had a silent "h" but native Maori speakers say the "h" is pronounced. 'Illegal Flier' Claim Ends School Board Term

Helen Casteel speaks to campaign attack, with stunning charge.

Outgoing Parkway district school board member Helen Casteel said Wednesday that a smear tactic aimed at her during the recent campaign was the work of "a city council member." Casteel, who lost a run for a third 3-year term April 3, spoke during the public portion of the first school board meeting with newly-elected Kim Applebaum and re-elected incumbent Beth Feldman. She said someone "anonymous" put 22,000 fliers in voters' mailboxes that denigrated her as a candidate. What follows is the text of her speech Wednesday night, without editing on Chesterfield Patch's part. First, I want to say “Thank You” to our future service men and women, as well as those who have served in the past and those who are currently defending our country. I also…

So, if the flyer claimed both Feldman and Casteel should not be re-elected (presuming equality of claim on both), how can one reason that the flyer accounted for the difference in vote count between the two. Thus, Casteel's claim is illogical and irrational as this flyer would have a net zero impact between Casteel and Feldman, but could improve their rival's vote count (Applebaum's).   more ›

Who Gets Your Votes, To Spend $210M On Public Schools?

Chesterfield school board race heats up with three good candidates.

At a glance, it's three candidates for two spots on the Parkway District Board of Education (total seven members) in the April 3 election. A term is three years. Two are incumbents, current board Vice President Beth Feldman, and 2-term member Helen Casteel. Kim Appelbaum is the third candidate and challenger to the two incumbents. She is an IT contract manager and Ballwin resident. See who else is on the Parkway school board. The Chesterfield-based Parkway School District has an annual budget of some $210 million a year to spend on public education—the majority of it from residents' property taxes. Read candidates' bios, in their own words: Beth Feldman 314-317-9569 I have been a resident of Parkway since I married in 1990. My husband and …

Parkway's New 'Look' Ditches Torch for Open Book and Sun-Like Image; Eliminates Word

School board to introduce its new branding Thurs., 10am, Queeny Park at a districtwide fete.

With a pep rally of sorts set for Thursday, Parkway School District's Board of Education is set to introduce its new branding image or logo to the public. The district's new superintendent, Dr. Keith Marty, will address the district gathering in Queeny Park, 10am, on Mason and Weidman roads. Parkway's newest brand can be recognized as a half-sun with rays, as well as an open book with the pages radiating out and upward in a half-circle. (See new and previous logos in photos with this article.) Parkway keeps its red color but drops the word district from the new look—saying simply Parkway Schools. The giant school district covers 68 square miles and was created in 1954 by the consolidation of three smaller districts, after citizens voted to…

And how are we supposed to know that is an open book? Unless it's this picture, the layout on "schools" doesn't look right to me. I know companies change logos for brand recognition but do we really need to spend money right now for school district logos? People don't choose a school by the logo as we know it's about location, location, location in moving to an area.   more ›
