The former State Senator officially took office this week on the board of the west St. Louis County area fire district.
The Monarch Fire Protection District Board was reconstituted this week following this month's election that saw Jane Cunningham handily defeat Cole McNary in a race pitting former state lawmakers for a director's seat for the Chesterfield-based district. Monarch serves parts of several municipalities in St. Louis County, including Creve Coeur, Wildwood, Ballwin and Maryland Heights. Former State Senator Jane Cunningham and State Representative Cole McNary are running for the lone seat open in April's election for the fire protection district.

Rick Gans joins incumbent Kim Evans and local businessman Russ Lake in competition for the single seat open in April's elections.
Former Monarch Board member Rick Gans has launched a bid to reclaim the seat he lost in 2011. Gans has been a critic of the Monarch Fire Protection District since leaving office and in the past has particularly butted heads with current board president Kim Evans. It's Evans seat that will be expiring in April. Evans has served as a MFPD director for the past 5-1/2 years. Evans, Gans and Russ Lake have filed for the seat since last Tuesday. Lake is a local businessman who served on Monarch's Citizens' Advisory Committee for the agency's budget. The last day to file is January 15. Related stories:
