New Mizzou Uniforms: Love 'Em or Hate 'Em?

Five University of Missouri athletic teams will wear new Nike uniforms next season in an attempt to appeal to potential recruits.

The University of Missouri football Tigers held the annual "Black and Gold" scrimmage over the weekend at Faurot Field, but the reason why many in the crowd of roughly 18,000 showed up for spring practice had little to do with what was happening between the tackles Saturday.  Of greater interest was the chance to get a look at what the Tigers will WEAR from sideline to sideline starting next fall. After months of hype, the school unveiled uniforms for the football squad along with new threads for both basketball teams, soccer and volleyball. Photo/Video Gallery From The MU Athletic Department The fashion statement comes as the school makes the move from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference, and as athletic department officials told …

Marquette's Boys Hoops Take Upset Win Over WG

Ryan Rosburg’s 25 points and 17 rebounds lead Mustangs to sensational win over non-conference rival Webster Groves at historic Roberts Gymnasium.

Every bit of grit and toughness the tenth-ranked Marquette Mustangs had led them Tuesday night to an upset win over third-ranked Webster Groves, at the WG historic Roberts Gymnasium. By the end of the evening, Chesterfield's Marquette proved it had more than enough in its tank to handle the winning task, with a brilliant 27-point, 17-rebound effort by senior Ryan Rosburg. The winning Mustangs began the new year with a thrilling 55-53 win over Webster Groves. “That was like the longest fourth quarter I’ve ever seen in my life,” Marquette head coach Shane Matzen said. “I didn’t think it was ever going to end. I’m just glad we finished it off the right way. That game was like a war—for both teams.” In the fourth quarter, as both clubs took …

Notebook: Postseason Awards Put Stamp on Hoops Season

Parkway West forward Larry Toomey earns Suburban South Player of the Year honors.

It was a disappointing season for the Parkway West boys basketball team, but that did not slow down Larry Toomey. The 6-foot-6 senior forward was named the Suburban South Player of the Year earlier this month. Toomey shares this honor with University City junior guard Trevon Williams. Parkway West was 21-7 one year ago, but ended this season at 12-14 despite winning six of its final 10 games. The Longhorns and first-year head coach John Wright not only lose Toomey, but they will see six seniors graduate. Toomey’s next stop is West Point, as he will play for Army in the Patriot League this fall. Toomey became the seventh player in Longhorns history to reach 1,000 career points this season, and he led Parkway West with averages of 17.1 …

Marquette Boys Cannot Keep Pace With Chaminade

Marquette falls to unbeaten Chaminade, 75-45, in a Class 5 sectional matchup at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The Marquette Mustangs found out the hard way that there's more to the Chaminade Red Devils than Bradley Beal. The Mustangs, at least for a half, did what no other opponent could do to the All-American Beal. They contained and for all intents and purposes, shut down the University of Florida-bound guard. However, fellow senior Tevin Evans picked up the slack in the first half, then Beal began to light it up in the third quarter as the duo combined for 53 points on the night. The unbeaten Red Devils ran away from the upset-minded Mustangs in the second half for a 75-45 victory in a Class 5 sectional matchup Wednesday at the University of Missouri-St. Louis' Mark Twain Building. The Red Devils (27-0) thus earn a quarterfinal matchup with …

Notebook: Marquette Boys Claim First District Title in 15 Years

The Mustangs defeat top-seeded Parkway South, 30-28, in the Class 5 District 4 title game

It will most likely be the lowest scoring boys basketball district championship played in Missouri this season, but that matters very little to Marquette. The Mustangs, behind 6-foot-9 junior center Ryan Rosburg, defeated top-seeded Parkway South, 30-28, in the Class 5 District 4 title game at Lafayette High School on Friday night. Rosburg scored 14 points, including the tiebreaking basket with seven seconds left, to down the Patriots (21-6). The Mustangs won their three district games by a combined eight points. For Marquette (18-10) coach Shane Matzen and his seniors, the win had increased satisfaction given that the third-seeded Mustangs had lost three straight district title games. It is Marquette’s first district title in 15 years. …

Marquette Boys Drop Key Conference Game

Marquette lost to Parkway South, 45-42, and is now unlikely to win the Suburban West Conference.

Both the Parkway South and Marquette boys basketball teams came into Tuesday night’s game on a roll. Parkway South had won three straight games, and five out of its past six. Marquette had won five out of its past six games. As expected with two teams playing well, the contest was close. Each team showed why they are among the Suburban West Conference leaders in allowing the fewest points per game. It was a defensive-minded struggle. In the end, Parkway South made just a couple more plays than Marquette, and held on for a 45-42 road victory. Marquette (12-9) is now 3-2 in Suburban West play. Parkway South (17-4) is 3-1 in league play as this swing game allowed the Patriots to stay in contention for the league title. The expectation going …

Marquette's Inside Game Wears Down Kirkwood

Marquette uses its inside presence to control the Pioneers and coast to a 63-50 victory.

Both Marquette and Kirkwood were coming off of losses, but Marquette righted the ship with a win, using its inside presence to wear down the Pioneers and coast to a 63-50 victory. The entire game was a tale of two styles between the former Suburban West Conference rivals. Marquette (8-7) was intent to dump it inside and drive the lane, forcing the smaller guards from Kirkwood (8-7) into foul trouble. Kirkwood, on the other hand, tried to rely on its outside shooting, which was good in spurts, but was not enough to pull out a win on the road. Kirkwood came out of the gates shooting well from 3-point range, going 3-for-5 from behind the arc in the first four minutes of the game. The Pioneers led for most of the first quarter. It was then …

Marquette Boys Struggle in Final Two Outings at Meramec

The Mustangs fall to De Smet, 61-48, and to Troy, 48-45, at the Meramec Holiday Festival Tournament.

The Marquette Mustangs met the De Smet Spartans in the quarterfinal round of the Meramec Holiday Festival Tournament on Tuesday evening. The Mustangs, who entered the game with a 5-3 mark, have relied all season on 6-foot-9 junior center Ryan Rosburg. De Smet put the Mustangs' ambitions for win No. 6 on ice as its smallest player, 5-foot-8 sophomore Jimmy Barton, outgunned the Mustangs' big man. The Spartans won, 61-48. Rosburg had only one simple word to describe his evening as De Smet's stifling defense limited him to 13 points. "Frustrating," Rosburg said. Barton, meanwhile, was all smiles after scoring 12 points, including a dramatic last-second 3-pointer at the end of the first half that marked the turning point of the game. "We ran …

Rosburg Leads Marquette Over Lancers

Junior Ryan Rosburg of Marquette High School scores 20 points as the Mustangs defeat Lafayette High School, 41-26.

In a matchup between two Rockwood rivals, the Marquette Mustangs beat the Lafayette Lancers in the first round of the Meramec Holiday Tournament on Monday. The Mustangs entered the contest at 4-3 and notched their fifth win of the season by taking the defensive struggle, 41-26. The Lancers dropped to 3-4 with Monday's game. Marquette's big man Ryan Rosburg was dominant in the contest, leading all scorers with 20 points. The 6-foot-9 junior overwhelmed the Lancers in the paint with his rebounding and a pair of dramatic slam dunks. Marquette coach Shane Matzen said the victory was similar to previous meetings between the two rivals, but with a twist on Lafayette's offensive game. "I'm proud of our guys, they kept their hands up and defended …

Marquette Big Man Rosburg Meets His Match

Holt's Dantiel Daniels went head-to-head with Marquette's Ryan Rosburg. Holt came out on top, 63-51, Friday night at the Family Arena.

Two of the area's top post players went head to head when Wentzville Holt met Marquette in the final game of the first session of the inaugural GAC/Suburban Basketball Challenge. Both Holt's Dantiel Daniels and Marquette's Ryan Rosburg displayed the skills that have made them Division I recruits. In the end, it was Daniels who had a little more help from his more experienced friends as the Indians defeated Marquette 63-51 on Friday night at the Family Arena. Holt improved its record to 4-0 and gave the St. Charles-area schools its first victory over the 17-game shootout that pits St. Charles against Suburban St. Louis schools. Marquette fell to 3-3. The Suburban schools had won the first three games of the event, but the 6-foot-6 Daniels …
