Marquette's Boys Hoops Take Upset Win Over WG

Ryan Rosburg’s 25 points and 17 rebounds lead Mustangs to sensational win over non-conference rival Webster Groves at historic Roberts Gymnasium.

Every bit of grit and toughness the tenth-ranked Marquette Mustangs had led them Tuesday night to an upset win over third-ranked Webster Groves, at the WG historic Roberts Gymnasium. By the end of the evening, Chesterfield's Marquette proved it had more than enough in its tank to handle the winning task, with a brilliant 27-point, 17-rebound effort by senior Ryan Rosburg. The winning Mustangs began the new year with a thrilling 55-53 win over Webster Groves. “That was like the longest fourth quarter I’ve ever seen in my life,” Marquette head coach Shane Matzen said. “I didn’t think it was ever going to end. I’m just glad we finished it off the right way. That game was like a war—for both teams.” In the fourth quarter, as both clubs took …

Marquette Boys Cannot Keep Pace With Chaminade

Marquette falls to unbeaten Chaminade, 75-45, in a Class 5 sectional matchup at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The Marquette Mustangs found out the hard way that there's more to the Chaminade Red Devils than Bradley Beal. The Mustangs, at least for a half, did what no other opponent could do to the All-American Beal. They contained and for all intents and purposes, shut down the University of Florida-bound guard. However, fellow senior Tevin Evans picked up the slack in the first half, then Beal began to light it up in the third quarter as the duo combined for 53 points on the night. The unbeaten Red Devils ran away from the upset-minded Mustangs in the second half for a 75-45 victory in a Class 5 sectional matchup Wednesday at the University of Missouri-St. Louis' Mark Twain Building. The Red Devils (27-0) thus earn a quarterfinal matchup with …

Marquette Boys Drop Key Conference Game

Marquette lost to Parkway South, 45-42, and is now unlikely to win the Suburban West Conference.

Both the Parkway South and Marquette boys basketball teams came into Tuesday night’s game on a roll. Parkway South had won three straight games, and five out of its past six. Marquette had won five out of its past six games. As expected with two teams playing well, the contest was close. Each team showed why they are among the Suburban West Conference leaders in allowing the fewest points per game. It was a defensive-minded struggle. In the end, Parkway South made just a couple more plays than Marquette, and held on for a 45-42 road victory. Marquette (12-9) is now 3-2 in Suburban West play. Parkway South (17-4) is 3-1 in league play as this swing game allowed the Patriots to stay in contention for the league title. The expectation going …

Marquette Bench Sparks Amazing Rally Past Lindbergh

Marquette substituted for all its starters and the following 30-7 run led the Mustangs to a come-from-behind win over Lindbergh at home.

After watching Lindbergh score the first eight points of the third quarter to build a nine-point lead Thursday night, Marquette coach Shane Matzen called timeout and subbed in five players off his bench to send a wakeup call to his starters. Not even he could have predicted what happened next. Marquette’s substitutes followed with a 30-7 run to take control of the game and lead them to a 54-44 come-from-behind win over Lindbergh at Marquette High School. “We went from maybe one of the poorest three minutes I’ve seen in my 15 years here to maybe the best four minutes I’ve ever seen,” Matzen said. “It was really hard to comprehend to tell you the truth. All of a sudden it just turned around." The loss was the third in a row for Lindbergh (5-…

Boys Hoops: Marquette Unable to Hold Down SLUH

The Mustangs drop a hard-fought game to SLUH, 48-46, in the opening round of the 11th Annual Webster Classic.

Marquette's boys varsity basketball coach Shane Matzen commented before the start of his team's contest against St. Louis University High School on Thursday night that the goal in competing in tournaments such as the 11th Annual Webster Classic is to test his squad against the best. "They are very well-coached and shoot well, so we will need to play sound basketball to be successful against them," Matzen said of SLUH before the game. While SLUH is not one of the top-ranked teams in the area, or even a favorite to win the Webster tournament, they certainly delivered the best they have to offer in a 48-46 victory over the Mustangs thanks to an impressive performance by Jr. Billikens' senior Sam Hill. Hill struck for a trio of 3-pointers in …

Boys Basketball: Marquette Relying on Rosburg

Marquette finished last season with a 15-13 record, including 4-4 in the Suburban West Conference. They are led by junior Ryan Rosburg, who averaged 14.6 points per game.

The primary thing every high school coach looks for from a young team is improvement throughout the season. And that was certainly the case with the Marquette boy's basketball team last winter. The Mustangs, who usually started a freshman and a sophomore and had a couple of other underclassmen in their regular rotation, struggled at times during the early part of the season. But they finished very strong, winning eight of their last 10 games, including a win against a very good Webster Groves (27-3) team. Marquette lost in the district finals against Parkway West and finished the season with a 15-13 overall record. The Mustangs were 4-4 in the Suburban West Conference. Marquette may  be even younger than it was last season with only two …
