County Library headquarters was just remodeled, and now the library board wants higher taxes to tear it down, and build another one.
The St. Louis County Library Board recently voted to ask for a six-cent tax hike on the current 16-cent per $100 property valuation, for the purpose of tearing down and rebuilding the County library’s headquarters. I went to the library headquarters after that. The building is on Lindbergh Boulevard in Ladue. What did I find? They had just remodeled the place—the same building they now want to tear down. And I don’t mean they remodeled the place several years ago, I mean in the last nine months. An article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch by Paul Hampel said the headquarters was built in 1960 and has been well maintained, but did have a leak in the roof. Well, fix the roof, don’t tear down the building. When my house had a leak in the roof, …

Information was provided by the St.Louis County Library. The St. Louis County Library Board of Trustees approved a tax levy ballot issue at its meeting on April 16, aimed at long overdue renovations and replacements of the library’s aging facilities and enhancements to programs, collections and services. The measure, which will appear on the November 2012 ballot, is the first increase the library has requested of voters since 1983. St. Louis County Library recently contracted to update the district’s Facilities Master Plan. The findings, which are posted on the library’s website, indicate the need for significant capital improvements in order to meet growing community needs. The tax levy would allow SLCL to address immediate challenges to …

St. Louis County Library and the YMCA are teaming up to help find volunteers interested in helping St. Louisans improve their reading skills. The YMCA Community Literacy program will train volunteers to help children who are reading below grade level. Volunteers can use St. Louis County Library branches as meeting places to conduct tutoring sessions. This one-on-one program has proven very successful in the past: participants’ skills often show an improvement of two grade levels. At this time there is a six-month waiting period for those who have requested tutoring, so volunteers are urgently needed. Applications for the YRead volunteer program can be obtained at all branches of St. Louis County Library. Those who apply will also be …

Sachs offers events suitable for young and old alike with their library programming efforts.
This week, Patch introduces you to Marsha Ramey, manager of the Sachs branch of the St. Louis County Library. Everybody knows a library is a place to check out books, use computers and even read the daily papers, but library special event programming also shows the community that the library is an energizing and engaging place. Residents both young and old can enjoy the many educational events at no cost, and many of the events are just plain fun. At the Sachs branch of the St. Louis County Library, special event programming is overseen by branch manager, Marsha Ramey. “You learn about event planning on the job,” Ramey said. “Every community is different. Something can be popular at our branch, and at others it can fall flat.” One thing …
