St. Louis area police and school administrators are taking security measures in schools to the next level, even to the point of perhaps conducting training for teachers about how to disarm intruders and negotiate with shooters who invade schools. St. Louis County Police Department officers and members of the Safe Schools Partnership met Thursday morning at the Rockwood School District Administrative Annex in Eureka to continue discussions about how to bolster future safety in schools. Serious crime in areas protected by St. Louis County Police Department officers has decreased in 2012, dropping to its lowest level since 1969. The total population served directly by county police is more than 410,000. Index crime statistics comparing 2012 to 2011 in the municipalities served by county officers, as well as unincorporated St. Louis County, show an overall reduction of 8.7 percent. This police-only, internal meeting is being called to discuss what changes in security that school districts leaders would suggest, as everyone processes and works through the tragedy that occurred Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Due to the recent event in Connecticut, St. Louis County Police Department officers and members of the Safe Schools Partnership just announced Tuesday morning they will be meeting this Thursday at 9 a.m. Safe Schools Partnership of St. Louis County was launched during the 1998-1999 school year. It is a collaborative agreement between the county police department, area police departments, school districts, and other concerned agencies, with the sole goal of assuring safety for children. Representatives from the St. Louis County Police Department’s Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force,
which include the Chesterfield Police Department, will receive the 2012 “Outstanding Community Prevention Effort Award” in Washington, D.C. on Thursday.
The heroin-deterrent “Not-Even-Once” campaign initiated in the St. Louis metropolitan area by St. Louis County Police Department officers is credited for a 30 percent drop in deaths from the drug since the effort was launched. The campaign's results also were noticed on a larger scale, resulting in the department just receiving a national award in heroin education. The award will be presented Thursday by President Barack Obama’s drug czar, director Gil Kerlikowske of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, in Washington, D.C. St. Louis County Police Department officers this coming week will participate in a stepped up effort to check drivers for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) to help curb holiday injuries and deaths.
Where have you last seen sobriety checkpoints in Chesterfield? You may be seeing them again soon. St. Louis County Police Highway Safety Unit and Division of Patrol officers will conduct sobriety checkpoints throughout the month of December. St. Louis County Police media officer Randy Vaughn said specially trained officers will check motorists to reduce the number of intoxicated drivers on streets and highways. Inconvenience to motorists will be minimal, he said. Chesterfield is covered by the 7th Precinct of the St. Louis County Police Department, who will participate in the 2012 Holiday DWI Enforcement Campaign Dec. 10-16 to stop people from driving impaired. In addition to a new mobile equipment storage truck and armored vehicle, the St. Louis County Police Department has purchased a new helicopter for its Metro Air Support Division. The $2.1 million craft is a MD-500e helicopter that will replace an older 1967 surplus army helicopter currently used by Metro Air Support, maintaining its fleet of aircraft at six. The St. Louis County Police Department was able to purchase the helicopter by jointly applying with the St. Louis Port Authority for a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Urban Areas Security Initiative.
