Marquette Rallies To Defeat Oakville In District Football Opener

Mustangs trailed 14-3 at halftime, but came back to win on a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Austin Powers.

BALLWIN -- A cold, miserable Friday night at Marquette Stadium ended in celebration and jubilation for the homestanding Marquette Mustangs, who rallied from a two-touchdown, first-half deficit to defeat the visiting Oakville Tigers 16-14 in the MSHSAA district playoff opener for both clubs. Marquette trailed throughout the entire game, but managed to take the lead when junior quarterback Austin Powers hit senior wide receiver Brad Cruse for a 35-yard touchdown that gave the Mustangs its first advantage of the night. Powers threw two touchdowns in the second half, both on deep passes up the sideline, to rally Marquette back to victory. Marquette Hands Lafayette a Suburban West and State Playoff Berth

Mustangs couldn't get the offense going in loss.

The Lafayette Lancers needed a big win on Friday night to clinch a berth in the MSHSAA Class 6 state football playoffs, and they got it, with a 41-7 win over the Marquette Mustangs at Marquette Stadium. The victory gave Lafayette its first Suburban West Conference championship since 2008, with an 8-0 record in league games this season. The Lancers jumped on Marquette quickly, scoring three touchdowns in the first 12 minutes to leave little doubt about what Friday’s outcome would be. Marquette finished the year with a 3-7 record. Unfortunately for Marquette, its offense was going south on Thursday, and couldn’t seem to put together enough good plays to sustain any of its early drives. In fact, Marquette quarterback Daniel Slattery, who …

Football Preview: Marquette Challenged to Duplicate 2010 Success

Marquette earned a trip to the Class 6 sectionals in 2010. But, they now lack experience.

The Marquette Mustangs sneaked up on area football teams last year. The Mustangs raced to the school’s first-ever Suburban West championship last fall with an 8-3 record that few observers expected. Marquette, which shared the Suburban West title in 2010 with Lindbergh and Eureka, will not be able to sneak up on teams this year. The Mustangs are 1-0 after winning its season-opening game at home over Windsor, 30-8. Marquette features a junior-laden roster that has little experience, so they will have their work cut out for them in seeking a return trip to the Class 6 playoffs. “It is a young group with a lot of sophomores and juniors, but we really like these kids,” Marquette coach Ryan Thornhill said. Thornhill, who enters his fifth season…

Two Marquette Players on Suburban West Conference Team

Seniors Sam Vaughn and Maddie Bush were named to the all-conference team.

Meanwhile, Lindbergh High School won 20 games and also won a district title, winning in Class 3 District 2. Northwest High School won only two league games but peaked in the playoffs, winning the Class 3 District 1 championship. Lindbergh beat Northwest, 1-0, in an all-conference matchup in the Class 3 sectionals. But the Flyers then lost to Ursuline Academy, 1-0. Ursuline also ended the season for Lafayette. The Bears defeated the Lancers, 1-0, in sectional play. Lafayette and Eureka High School led the way in the recently announced all-…

Suburban West: Marquette Freshman Named to All-Conference Team

Both nearby Lafayette and Eureka have five players on the team.

Lafayette and Eureka high schools finished in the middle of the pack of the highly competitive Suburban West Conference this spring. But the Rockwood schools were both well-recognized on the all-conference team with five first-team selections each on the 24-player squad. Lafayette, which finished fourth in the conference, had the co-Player of the Year in Will DuPont. The junior infielder led the Suburban West in four different categories and the league in three major departments: batting average (.528), home runs (six) and RBIs (35). He was also the league leader in slugging percentage (.876) and was second in both runs scored (41) and stolen bases (25). Suburban West Roundup: Spring Postseason in Full Motion

Patch takes a look at the latest news and notes from the Suburban West.

Baseball There was a lot of talk in the preseason among Suburban West Conference baseball coaches on what kind of record it would take to win the league in 2011, especially with the new format which includes back-to-back games against all eight teams in the conference. "I thought maybe a 10-6 record might win it," Lindbergh High School coach Darin Scott said. Parkway South High School coach Adam Stahl concurred. "I thought five or six losses might win it," Stahl said. "I never expected it to go the way it did with the caliber of teams in this conference, which I think is the toughest in the entire state of Missouri." Parkway South got off to a great start in the league, and overall, and defended its title with a pair of wins last week …
