Identity Thief Robs Chesterfield Resident of Tax Return

Police say an unknown scammer used the social security number of a Chesterfield resident to file their taxes and claim their return. It's a kind of fraud that the IRS reports is on the rise nationally.

A Chesterfield resident attempting to file their taxes this year recently received a shock after discovering that an identity thief had already used their social security number to complete the return. This tax time scam is becoming a growing problem in the U.S. and involves snagging a social security number in order to file a tax return before its legitimate owners can, diverting any tax return to the criminals. Often individuals won’t know it has happened until they try and file, only to have their electronic return rejected or to receive a letter from the IRS saying it has already been claimed, according to a recent article in Forbes. Chesterfield Resident Sentenced to 40 Months in Prison for Tax Fraud

Chesterfield resident Cory Atkinson received a 40-month prison sentence and was ordered to pay $4 million in restitution to the IRS for his part in a massive tax fraud case. According to a press release from the Department of Justice, Atkinson and his brother Darain Atkinson were co-owners of U.S. Fidelis, at one time the nation’s largest marketer of vehicle service contracts (VSCs).
