Thursday Storm Gives Way To Cleanup; Many Schools Cancel Friday Classes

Some areas saw as much as 6 inches of snow, sleet and frozen precipitation.

A Thursday forecast of snow, sleet and other freezing precipitation that largely followed through as predicted will see Missouri Department of Transportation and other municipal street crews working into Friday to get ready for the morning commute. That, along with a National Weather Service forecast that called for additional nighttime snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch, has led many school districts, including Parkway, Rockwood and Ft. Zumwalt among many others, to cancel classes Friday. Our news partners at FOX2 have a complete list of school closings. MoDOT Engineer Becky Allmeroth told Patch that the amount of snow was the part of the forecast that didn't follow as planned. Either way, MoDOT said beforehand that it …

MoDOT Warns Use Caution in Evening Rush Hour After Tuesday's Snow

Large snow flakes fell across the St. Louis area Tuesday. MoDOT officials are warning drivers to use caution as they head home Tuesday evening.

MoDOT officials are warning drivers to use caution as they head home Tuesday evening, especially on ramps and bridges.  The National Weather Service reports there could be accumulation of up to one inch of snow in some parts of the St. Louis area Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to reach a high of around 20 degrees and light wind is also in the forecast. According to KMOV.com, several areas received at least a half-inch of accumulation as the narrow band of snow hit St. Louis and St. Charles counties beginning late morning. MoDOT is alerting drivers not to be alarmed if they see snow plows on the roads Wednesday. Severe weather is not on the way, MoDOT is performing a winter weather drill

The Missouri Department of Transportation warns drivers they may see snow plows on the roads Wednesday. It's part of a statewide snow drill taking place throughout the day, MoDOT stated in a news release. MoDOT officials said they began preparing for the area's first winter storm months ago. In rural areas, crews will take to the streets after 8 a.m. and in urban areas, the drill will begin after 9 a.m., according to MoDOT. As a response to a simulated snowfall event, trucks with snowplows and spreaders will deploy across state routes during the drill that is set to take approximately six hours. View From Your Door: Share Your Snow Day Photos

Photojournalist Drew Selman shares photos from a walk around his Chesterfield neighborhood. What are you seeing on your street?

I've admitted before that when winter weather hits, my response is to dig deeper under the covers. I got out this morning to head to a Missouri Department of Transportation press conference, and I hit the grocery store for the Diet Coke I forgot yesterday (if I'm going to be snowed in, I need my caffeine!). But, unless power goes out in Chesterfield, my plan is to stay put and report mainly from my house.  So, I'll need you help. What are you seeing on your street? If you've snapped a few pictures, even if it's just with your phone, I'd love to see them. Photojournalist Drew Selman took a walk around his neighborhood and shared some photos with us. You can do the same by clicking "Add your photos & videos." Or e-mail them to me at rachel.…

Chesterfield Grocery Stores Busy, Still Stocked Before Storm

A steady stream of customers has left some supplies depleted, but basics and more are still available.

As Chesterfield residents prepared for a major winter storm, they hit grocery stores in full force. Parking lots were full, check out lines were long at times, and registers rarely stopped their beeping. Despite being steadily busy, several Chesterfield grocery stores were well stocked with the basics. Greg Marion, manager of the Dierbergs at Clarkson and Baxter roads, said deliveries and overnight stocking put bread, milk and eggs back on the shelves. He said heavy shopping Sunday brought stock low, but at about 10 a.m. the shelves were full.  Rock salt was still on the shelves at that Dierbergs. It was available at the Dierbergs at Olive Boulevard and Woods Mill Road, too. A cashier at that store said she had seen a steady stream of …

Seven Inches of Snow Could Hit St. Louis Area

MoDOT is urging commuters to be careful on their drive Thursday morning.

With snow scheduled to roll through St. Louis overnight, the Missouri Department of Transportation is working hard to keep motorists safe on the road. Overnight on Tuesday, road temperatures dropped as temperatures plummeted, raising the threat of freezing precipitation on roadways. Snow is forecasted to hit the area tonight and continue through Thursday’s rush hour commute. The National Weather Service forecasted the heaviest snow accumulation of 6 to 7 inches along the Interstate 70 corridor from Columbia to St. Louis. “Thursday morning might be very slick and messy,” MoDOT spokeswoman Kara Price said. MoDOT advises motorists to plan for these conditions and make alternate travel plans such as going into work later in the day or …

MoDOT Prepares for Coming Winter Storm

The National Weather Service is calling for 3 to 6 inches of snow beginning tonight in the St. Louis area.

The National Weather Service is forecasting 3 to 6 inches of snow within the next two days in the St. Louis area. Two to 4 inches of snow accumulation is expected to fall beginning around 4 p.m., with a 70 percent chance of more precipitation tomorrow morning. Kara Price, a Missouri Department of Transportation spokeswoman, said that MoDOT is ready for the storm. They currently are pretreating more heavily traveled roads with a salt and beet juice mixture. Beet juice makes the salt more effective, fighting through icier patches. MoDOT has around 32,000 tons of the salt mixture ready at the beginning of winter, and they have about 22,000 tons left, which is plenty for this time of year, Price said. “We are prepared with 220 trucks and 400 …

Ice Causes Handful of Minor Accidents

The latest winter weather has caused several one-car accidents and calls for assistance in Chesterfield.

Chesterfield Police responded to just under 50 calls for service since 7 p.m. last night when the latest round of winter weather began.  There were about 30 accidents in town as of 11 a.m. Thursday. Chesterfield Police Officer Lt. Sheliah Davis said overwhelmingly these were one-car accidents where the vehicle slid on the ice and off the road or into another object.  Police also responded to 14 traffic hazard or motorist assist calls, which can be anything from a car stalled to a vehicle stuck on a hill due to ice. Davis said school closures helped take some traffic off the roads this morning. Both Parkway and Rockwood school districts canceled classes. She said the calls have tapered off this morning. This number of calls is pretty …
