Chesterfield Declines Adding Eberwein Barn to Historic Landmark List

The move reflects a similar decision made two years ago, but goes against the hopes of the city's Historic Landmark and Preservation Commission.

A member of the Chesterfield Historic and Landmark Preservation Commission has raised concerns about a barn in Eberwein Park not being added to the city's list of historical landmarks. The city decided to save the building almost two years ago when it bought the land that is now Eberwein Park. At the time, the property also had a family farmhouse, but the city council decided the structure was too expensive to restore, despite pleas from several residents to save it.  As a compromise, the city voted to spend $140,000 to historically restore the barn, but raze the house for $45,000 (estimates to restore the home as well were upwards of $300,000.) The renovation work on the barn is now nearly complete.   Preservation Commission member Todd …

Girl Scouts Dig Chesterfield's Eberwein Park

Dog park to get another feature.

Chesterfield Cadette Girl Scouts committed to creating a butterfly garden in the city's newest park, Eberwein Park—also known as the popular Dog Park. The scouts' leader said a local nursury would be providing native Missouri plants for the garden, but not donating. The girls and the leader have been seen on the park's corner of Old Baxter Road and Highcroft Drive, working on the garden. The park supplies water and hoses for the community gardens at the park, in a separate area. The Girl Scouts are working toward a top ranking, with the volunteer project of the butterfly garden.

Honk If You Like Shuffleboard!

The courts are ready in Chesterfield. Take our poll.

The shuffleboard courts are on the cement slab at Chesterfield's newest park, Eberwein—also known as the dog park. Bring your own cues and discs for play—some call them tangs and biscuits. The courts are near the entrance to the park, between the bathrooms barn and the road, Old Baxter. The city allotted about $8,000 to construct the courts. The park is located behind Dierberg's Market Place (Clarkson and Baxter roads) and bounded by Baxter and Old Baxter roads, and Highcroft Drive. The park also has community gardens, a walking trail, and a butterfly garden in the works.

Rabbits Not Welcome At Dog Park

The city fixes up Eberwein Park for its grand opening; fences in gardens.

Chesterfield is ready for a grand opening Wednesday of its newest park, Eberwein, with fencing around 45 community gardens to deter rabbits and others perhaps hankering for fresh veggies. Eberwein Park, on Old Baxter Road at Highcroft Drive, also houses the city's popular dog park that opened September 1 and garnered some 1,200 members in three months. The fenced in dog park has a dog-friendly fountain, a covered area, and an area exclusively for smaller dogs. The raised beds for gardens were installed by city workers earlier this year. Smart white wood plank fencing around the gardens suggests a farm. The fencing has metal screening between the slats. Greens appear to be growing nicely inside. There are several water hookups with hoses …

Chesterfield Dog Park Gets More Parking—Gravel Only This Time

Chesterfield's only dog park is so popular, city briefly considered building others in different parks. Parking space is key problem.

Chesterfield's 6-month-old dog park in Eberwein Park is so popular, that parking the cars of dog-owners has become an issue. City officials talked about maybe spreading around the love and adding dog parks to other city parks, in order to disperse some of the parking. Other ideas included paving over more of Eberwein to create more spaces.  But few seem enthusiastic about adding more concrete to what was defined as a passive park. LATEST UPDATE: City said late Tuesday that the gravel lot is already installed. UPDATE: The City Council voted Monday night to add 12 more off-street parking spots with gravel only, costing about $5,000. That would bring the total to 46 spaces at the park, by Chesterfield Patch calculations. The dog park sold …

Gardens and (Eek!) Shuffleboard Going to the Dogs' Park

One Chesterfield neighbor not so sure about the implications.

Chesterfield City Councilman Barry Flachsbart envisioned a shuffleboard tournament for the city's newest park, Eberwein—otherwise known as the enormously popular Chesterfield Dog Park. The city sold more than 1,050 dog park memberships in three months last year at $10 a piece. Flaschsbart also pondered aloud, during a city Parks and Recreation Committee meeting, whether just two shuffleboard courts would be sufficient? The committee and city council went on to unanimously approve the plan Wednesday, to indeed install two shuffleboard courts for $8,065 from the Parks Fund Reserve. Consensus was, more shuffleboard courts could always be added. The same city representatives went on to agree and spend twice as much ($16,000) on 30 community …

Chesterfield's Newest Park Gets a Sweet Sign

Where is this dog park?

Chesterfield's newest park got a more permanent sign earlier this month. (See accompanying photo) Eberwein Park has the popular dog park within its borders, and recently added more paved parking spaces when 1,050 residents paid to join since September 1. The park was private property until barely two year ago, when Eberwein decendents of the property owner agreed to sell to the City. Two houses on the property were demolished and a red barn propped up and used in part for park storage. It's located on a corner across from Monarch Firehouse No. 1 along Baxter, Highcroft and Old Baxter roads. Other portions of the park back up to Dierbergs Market Place and a cluster of seven tiny properties with large homes. Yearly fees to the dog park …

New Chesterfield Dog Park Lacks Enough Car Parking

One thousand-plus members and 25 parking spaces leads to parking on the new grass.

Chesterfield's new dog park in Eberwein Park is a huge hit with animal lovers, but is short on parking spaces. With more than 1,000 residents signing up for membership ($30 each per year) since September 1, there is no way 20 parking spaces is sufficient. Additionally, the city apparently bans parking along the otherwise residential streets bounding the park on two sides. So what's a dog lover to do? The park is a nice place to gather with like-minded pet people What can the city do? With $30,000 a year in revenue from the park, there may be something the city can do. The city recently followed up with tree planting around the border of the park, and area Girl Scouts planned a butterfly garden near the park driveway. Patch will follow up, …

Chesterfield Award Goes to Girl Scouts for First Time

It's always been Boy Scouts, apparently, awarded an environmental designation.

Girl Scout West Middle Troop 2534 got an environmental award from the City of Chesterfield Monday, for working in the city's parks. The Stellar Green Youth Team designation has 45 previous honorees, officials said. The four scouts—Tracy Booth, Nicole Moore, Mariel McMindes, Lauren Schumacher—were working to earn the highest rank in Middle Scouts, the Silver Award. They are designing a butterfly garden for the city's newest park, Eberwein. Girl Scouts from Cadette Troop 1688 led opening flag ceremonies Monday at a regular Chesterfield City Council meeting—posting the colors and reciting the Girl Scout pledge. Mayor Gieger also recognized the upcoming 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts of America in 2012, with a proclamation. Scouting runs …

Inside Story On Chesterfield Barn

What's in there? It's historic?

A wooden door was open Friday on a big, old red barn preserved in Chesterfield's newest park, Eberwein Park on Old Baxter Road. It is beside the path to the new 800-member dog park. Don't tell Parks and Recreation monitors, but I thrust my arm and camera inside the barn and fired off a few shots, so we could see what it's like in there. Well, there is nearly more open space between the walls than there are wood walls. And former electrical lighting appears to be from the era of one-bare-lightbulb hanging on a cord from the ceiling beams. A good portion of the red landmark looked like an add-on, and has dirt floors contoured by rushing water. Another portion of the barn looks to be raised on cinderblock, with plank floors—a room within a …

As to question on why the barn is "historic" here is a bit of background. The entire complex of buildings was felt to be of historic significance. It was the only known remaining intact farm in Chesterfield. This community hds a strong farming history and little of that remains today. The original house was over 100 years old and recognized as a Chesterfield Century building and the entire …   more ›
