Whiz Kids: Fifth-Grade Students Show Support for Marines

Students in a Chesterfield Elementary class send care packages to Marines who are deployed overseas.

The room was abuzz as the students in Brian Hultquist's fifth-grade class at Chesterfield Elementary School wait to be chosen to organize and box the care packages that will be sent to their adopted Marine. The students are volunteering to sort, itemize, fill and seal boxes of food and personal items for Grace Fryer, a Marine sergeant who is serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan. The class project is part of an adopt-a-Marine program that connects groups with a deployed Marine.  Students listed each goody on the customs slip. Each item has to be written on the slip so the post office knows what’s inside, the students explained. Chesterfield Elementary Students Learn Through Pen Pals, Dancing

The fifth-grade students in Jennifer Strub's class completed a service learning project with their pen pals at Bayless Intermediate School.

Twice a month, fifth graders in Jennifer Strub's class at Chesterfield Elementary School do two things: write letters to their pen pals and practice their dance moves. Their pen pals are fourth-grade students at Bayless Intermediate School. Since October, the students have been talking about the differences between their schools. They draw pictures for each other, including self-portraits. They chat about their day-to-day lives. And, they discuss cultural differences. Many students at Bayless Intermediate are from other countries, including the Philippines, Vietnam and Bosnia, Strub said. She used to teach at the school and began the letter-writing project to help teach her students about different traditions and cultures. Connor Church …
