What Did It Take to Make Chesterfield a City?

With the 25th anniversary of the city's incorporation approaching this summer, where did Chesterfield's founders draw their inspiration.

The city of Chesterfield is gearing up for a celebration of its 25th anniversary since incorporation and one local publication has offered up a series of articles about the process city founders went through.

Leaders of the movement to incorporate Chesterfield—which failed the first time they tried—drew their inspiration from the city of Maryland Heights, which had just incorporated shortly before their effort, according to West Newsmagazine, in the first part of its series of articles about the anniversary.

The article, headlined "Reflecting on how it all began," noted that Maryland Heights was an inspiration, but the Chesterfield committee was not convinced that city had done everything right.

"We formed different committees to investigate what it took to be successful as a city," Dick Hrabko, a member of Chesterfield’s first city council, told the magazine. "Our intention was to hand the book to the first mayor and council and say, 'Here, use it or don’t use it.'"

The city had budgeted about a quarter-million dollars to commemorate the anniversary.
